Rik Wright has long occupied a distinctive space in the creative music scene, blending worldbeat rhythms, rock-band intensity, jazz vocabulary, and open-ended improvisation into a body of work that moves comfortably across traditions. A Seattle-based guitarist and composer, Wright leads Fundamental Forces, a quartet known for its balance of precision and spontaneity.
Between 2013 and 2016, Wright released Blue, Red, Green, and the live recording Subtle Energy, a four-album stretch that captures a band hitting its stride. With each release, the ensemble grew more fearless and assured, deepening its musical synergy. The recordings gained national airplay and steady critical attention, appearing on the JazzWeek, RMR, and CMJ radio charts, where three of the four broke into the Top 10, Red reaching #1.
Over time, the group has developed a shared musical language that gives the collective an identity distinct from that of any of its members. Wright has kept the original lineup of Fundamental Forces intact since 2010, a rare continuity in a field where personnel frequently rotate from project to project. That stability has fostered a level of trust and responsiveness that lends the music both elasticity and weight, qualities that come fully into focus on the group’s newest release.
With the band’s latest album, Fool’s Fate (2026), Wright takes a decisive step forward. The album carries the hallmarks that have defined Fundamental Forces — tightly woven syncopations, fearless improvisation, and addictive melodicism — while introducing a sharper edge and new momentum. The performances are more aggressive, the compositions more focused, and the band’s chemistry strikingly intuitive, marking both a confident return and a compelling new chapter.
Press
“Wright’s music is innovative, paving a path of his own making through the jazz kaleidoscope. Eclectic sounding with a flair for the exotic, Fundamental Forces is artistically imaginative and ventures into synthesizing a breed of blues, bebop, and rock that expands the public’s perception of jazz.” – AXS.com
“What’s so cool about Rik’s music and composition is that it’s really hard to distinguish between his rock & jazz influences and the result is some of the most fluid work you’ll ever hear in either arena.” – Contemporary Fusion
“Wright emerges as a kind of musical archaeologist, excavating influences from distant stylistic territories and repurposing them in ways that feel entirely contemporary. Every detail serves a purpose. Instruments enter and withdraw with precision.” - Paris Move
“The sweet sound of a walk through life’s landscapes, seascapes and dreamscapes… exquisite displays of precise melody, lush harmony and lockstep rhythm.” – Jazz Times
“Wright can fool you into thinking worldbeat one minute, rock the next, a touch of new age, and back to the core of jazz… Nicely done.” – Midwest Record Review
"There were times when I forgot that I was listening to a jazz album, as there were nods to a number of electronic/psychedelic bands. I have found that I listen to this album as often as I can, so that I can just free up my mind, drift off into my imagination, and let my mind wander." - FloRadio UK
“Wright’s compositions retain the hot and soulful feel of hard bop, while sometimes drawing on elements of third stream and/or fusion. Almost a fused tradition with unique and unexplored realms of jazz; keeping one foot in tradition, while the other foot is stepping into the future.” – Jazz Sensibilities
“Here we have a rare intersection of very accessible and very original jazz. Melodic, a bit funky, often beautiful.” – KFJC 89.7 FM
